Ubuntu devs are considering using empathy as default for Intrepid
As a follow-up to my recent post about Empathy being accepted into Gnome, it appears that the Ubuntu devs are looking for testing in anticipation of replacing Pidgin as the default IM client.

- Intrepid is the proper place to make such a replacement since the LTS was just released and there is enough time to work any kinks out.
- Empathy will probably be integrated at some point and Ubuntu should be on the leading edge of this (A.K.A. "It's a selling point).
- Empathy offers a much better path forward than Pidgin.
- Empathy offers voice/video right now, while Pidgin's has been promised for some time and is on an uncertain timeline.

Gnome has Empathy for You
Well, the Gnome 2.24 freeze is on, and something happened that I never imagined.
Just after 2.22 was released, I took a look at the upcoming Gnome release, and I said, for probably the fifth time, that I wish Empathy and Telepathy would make it into Gnome, but that it wasn't going to happen because
lopers have apparently gotten tired of waiting for these problems to be fixed and just went ahead and made Empathy and the associated libs part of Gnome (edit: only as external dependencies). I'm assuming that this move will put more pressure on the main developer to come into line and will make the project higher profile, giving him more manpower to work with.
Although I've said it before, this next part bears repeating. The inclusion of Empathy (and Telepathy) into Gnome is huge. Why? Well, just look at the history of GStreamer.
GStreamer came into Gnome as an immature and underpowered framework for audio and video. It took a few releases to mature, but it does pretty well these days (We all know it can be improved) and the next release will see more advanced features like DVD menus. Totem uses GStreamer. Rhythmbox uses it. Banshee uses it. Elisa uses it. Pretty much every application that wants to add audio or video is now using GStreamer ... even some KDE apps.
Telepathy is likely to work the same way for messaging. Right now, telepathy has real backends for text, voice, and video. It handles quite a few protocols through its own plugins and virtually everything else though libpurple (from Pidgin). In a couple of Gnome releases, we should be seeing Evolution, Ekiga, and Empathy in a giant symbiotic relationship. Suddenly, you will see that the person you're emailing is online and accepting IM/voice (but no video), and you will be able to click to start the conversation. This isn't too much different than the way GMail works now (and is a killer feature), but the desktop integration will be complete, meaning an easier time communicating for the Gnome user. I'm really looking forward to this eventuality. Oh, and can we get Soylent while we're at it? ;)

Deluge for TV ... Better this time.

Well, after my disastrous blog about using Liferea + Deluge had been aired out long enough to get the stink off, I decided to really try to get FlexRSS working. It's going fine for me now and in automatic mode.
Even though you probably all already know this, I'll write it down, anyway.
- Enable the FlexRSS plugin in Edit > Plugins.
- Click the "Preferences" button on the plugin page to set up FlexRSS.
- Get a feed. I think the easiest thing to do is to get one with every show like this: http://tvrss.net/feed/eztv/
- Create a "New" feed and put in the feed address (above), naming the feed EZTV or something.
- Look through the feed to find shows you want. Right click on them and choose "Create Filter."
- This will parse the file name and set up everything pretty much automatically for you. Check the Patterns to make sure they match well.
- If you plan to organize the TV, choose a directory to save in by using "Output."
- Check back every day to add more filters until all your shows are in.

That should work for the auto-download part. To play, click on the torrent entry in the main Deluge window, then choose the Files tab. You can double-click on the file to start it in your preferred player.
When you have watched and seeded the show, right-click the torrent entry and choose to delete everything, including the file.

Thank You, Google Docs!
A couple of months ago, I made a feature request to Google to add the ability to insert a video into a presentation. I mentioned that it should be pretty simple to just allow videos from YouTube or Google and use an embed tag. I'm not sure how recently they added the functionality, but it was there when I went to create a presentation for my class.

The Adobe Flash Specification is Now Open!
As of today, May1st, 2008, Adobe has removed the restrictions on the SWF and FLV specifications. Formerly, these specs could be used to make IDEs, but not players. Projects like Gnash and SWFdec can now use the official documentation to write compliant players for Unix-like systems. Ubuntu users may not need to stay 1-2 Flash versions behind. Thanks to Adobe for this move.

A Video Overview of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS

This was originally intended to be a single video, but neither YouTube nor Google Videos would host something that large, so I chopped it up into sections.

Let's start by talking about the desktop. If you have used Ubuntu before, the desktop will be very familiar. It has not changed much in the last few years. It does, however, have a few great new features in Ubuntu Hardy, so keep your ears and eyes open. Even if you haven't used Ubuntu before, you will notice some similarities to other operating systems. There are icons. There are panels. There are menus. There are also a few features which are not present on Microsoft Windows or Mac OS Ten. There are two panels on the desktop. This is configurable, and you can have one or several if you want to change the look of your desktop. I'll be describing the default setup in Ubuntu. The bottom panel has four elements: the "show desktop" icon, the taskbar, which shows all your windows on the present workspace, the workspace switcher, allowing you to organize your applications into work areas so that windows don't get cluttered, and the trash icon. To you, it may look similar to Microsoft Windows. These elements, along with just about everything else in Ubuntu, can be modified by clicking the right mouse button. The top panel contains the menus, quick-launchers, panel applets, the notification area, and the clock. The menus are divided into three categories. The applications menu gives you access to all the programs installed on your computer and has the ability to add more if you wish. These applications are divided into sensible categories and the applications are named for what they do. When you want to listen to music, you choose Sound and Video and open the Rhythmbox music player. When you want to do word processing, you go to Office and select the Open Office Word Processor. Finding and using your applications has never been easier. The places menu gives you quick access to the places you visit most often. Your user files, documents, videos, and other bookmarked areas are available at the top of the menu. If you need to delve into your computer's system files, access the CD or DVD drive, connect to a computer on the network, search for files, or find a recent file, those are all here, too. The system menu lets you change how your computer acts. The Preferences menu adjusts facets which only affect you as a single user, while Administration makes changes computer-wide for all users. You can also get information about your operating system or shut down the computer from here. Quick-launch icons give you super-fast access to your most-used programs. You can remove one by right-clicking on it. You can add another manually or by finding the menu item and either dragging it or right-clicking and choosing to Add this launcher to the panel. There are many small but handy applications which can run inside your panel. These are called applets. The fast user switching applet and the deskbar applet are included by default, but you can add more by right-clicking on the panel where you want them to appear. The notification area is similar to the system tray in Microsoft windows. Programs which send notifications will cause an icon to appear here. Typical notification icons include updates, error messages, the network manager, music players, chat clients, and the bittorrent client. In addition to the volume control and the quit button, you also have a clock and calendar. Clicking on this will give you a calendar for the current month and a list of your appointments. If you set a home locality, you will also see updated weather. Ubuntu also comes with fancy 3D effects for supported graphics cards. If you have a relatively modern desktop with NVidia, ATI Radeon, or Intel graphics, 3D effects should work with no configuration necessary. Pressing the Window or Command key along with E will show you all your workspaces. You can move windows around and change workspaces this way.Pressing Alt and Tab will rotate through your windows while showing a shot of each. No more guessing which of five similarly-named windows you want. If you enable extra effects in your preferences, you will even have the option of pressing Windows-Shift-S to get a fancier switching method. Extra effects also bring those wobbly windows you've probably seen on YouTube.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS has Firefox 3.0. In a recent round-up of the upcoming new browsers, CNet found Firefox 3.0 to be the overall winner, citing its security, stability, and extensibility. ZDNet benchmarked Firefox against other browsers and found it to be the fastest. Safari and Firefox basically tied. ARS Technica reported on tests of memory usage when opening thirty tabs. Firefox 3 beat all comers, even Opera, often considered to be the light-weight browser of choice. Because Firefox's extensions are part of what makes it so great, Ubuntu makes it easy to install extensions system-wide for every user. While not all extensions are available this way, the most common are. Firefox has a brand-new bookmarking system which keeps track of the most recent, most visited, and newly tagged. Tags mean that you never need to think about which of several categories you want to file a bookmark in. Pidgin 2.4 is a chat client which can talk to the networks for AIM, GTalk, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, Myspace, and many more. Because it concentrates on compatibility with many networks, not all the advanced features of every network are available. Pidgin doesn't support voice or video chat, for example. If you need this functionality, there are other clients which support it. Pidgin currently holds the top position on Lifehacker's list of top five IM clients. Ekiga is a software phone, much like Skype. It uses the open SIP protocol, making it able to talk to many other software phones. You can also purchase minutes to call out to cell phones and land lines around the world at very affordable rates, most often below those of Skype. Unfortunately, Skype's protocol is secret, and Ekiga is unable to cross the bridge to talk to Skype users. Skype DOES make a client for Ubuntu, though, so you can contact your Skype friends that way. This release of Ubuntu has a new bittorrent client called Transmission. Transmission is a light but full-featured client which supports multiple torrents, global and individual bandwidth usage, and creating torrents.
Ubuntu comes with many time-wasting games installed by default. While no one would call Ubuntu a gaming system, there are literally hundreds more to install from the repositories. Arcade, side-scrollers, strategy, simulation, and first-person shooters are all represented. There are no usable MMORPGs in the Ubuntu repositories, but several major games have Linux clients, and even more can run under the Windows compatibility layer. Let's watch Daeng lose at several easy games. (Ooh, the computer got him diagonally) Wow. He's really bad, isn't he?
Unlike other operating systems, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS comes with a full suite of office applications. You don't get a cut down version like Microsoft Works. You don't need to buy a new Mac to get it included, either. Evolution is a personal information manager which handles your e-mail, calendaring, address book, tasks, and memos. It can connect to POP mail systems like your company's e-mail or Hotmail, and it can use IMAP to read the mail while leaving it on the server. You can even read your GMail from Evolution. The calendar handles many formats, both local and on the network. New in Ubuntu is a connector for your Google Calendar. The address book integrates well with the file browser and the IM clients, allowing you to add chat buddies or send e-mail from the file browser. As mentioned before, tasks and appointments in Evolution show up on your desktop in the calendar. Double clicking on a date in the desktop calendar even brings up that date on teh Evolution calendar. How easy is that? Openoffice.org is probably the second-most famous piece of Free software next to Firefox. It may need no introduction, but you'll get one, anyway. The word processor is the brand-new 2.4 version of Openoffice.org, bringing better Microsoft Word compatibility, PDF editing, improved localization, including easier switching of spell-check languages, and more integration into the Ubuntu desktop. The spreadsheet has performance enhancements and something for those addicted to pivot tables. The presentation software has fancy new 3D slide transition effects. The database program gains compatibility with Access 2007 files. There is also a vector graphics program, but we'll be talking about that with the other graphics programs.
Ubuntu comes with all the programs you'll need to play music and video on your computer. While Ubuntu doesn't play many types of files right out of the box, almost every kind of file is playable after you install the right codecs. Sadly, due to digital rights management (DRM) and the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, a few formats can't be played legally without purchasing the codecs. Vendors like Fluendo offer these codecs in easy-to-install packs for less than you would think. If you are in a country which has more progressive laws, you can install these codecs from within Ubuntu using the codec installer. Totem movie player is a simple movie player which supports playlists. It has many plugins for visualization and connectivity. It can search your user area for videos, search YouTube, or even connect to your MythTV server to play new recordings, meaning you don't need to have a dedicated front-end to MythTV anymore. Let's search for a video and see what we get. pressing "f" takes us into full-screen mode. Pressing it again takes us back out. Now let's take a look at what YouTube has to say about Ubuntu Hardy. Since it's small, we can zoom using the 0, 1, or 2 buttons. That was great. What about music? Ubuntu's default music player, Rhythmbox, takes a music management approach to playing music. It searches your music library and organizes the tracks by artist and album. You can add other factors like genre and year, if you want. There's no need to go to the file manager and look through your collection. In fact, if you do that and double click on a file, Ubuntu assumes that you want to play a single file and opens the file in the Movie player. You can change this behavior if you want to, of course. Practically everything in Ubuntu is configurable. The music player handles your portable music player, whether it be an iPod, an MTP player (you know ... those that need to use Windows Media Player to transfer files), or a simple USB Mass Storage device. You can add files to, delete files from, and play files directly from your portable. It can even transcode on the fly for you. If you have a DAAP server like iTunes or Firefly, Rhythmbox will identify it automatically and the songs will appear in the left panel. Rhythmbox shares files using DAAP, too, so you can share files with your Rhythmbox and iTunes-using family or roommates. Put in a CD and you will see that Rhythmbox can play it, looking up the track information automatically on the internet. Right-click on the CD to rip it to your collection. Ubuntu also has a dedicated CD burner for those who want more control over their rips. Although you can't use the iTunes store since it only works with iTunes, there are a couple of stores for independent artists that you can use from within Rhythmbox. You can also purchase your tracks DRM free from Amazon. Hey, Ubuntu developers, we're waiting for that Amazon store plugin! New to Ubuntu this time around is Brasero, a CD burning application. While virtually everything the average user needs to do with regard to burning can be done from the file browser, many people feel more comfortable with a Nero-style CD burner, and the Ubuntu developers were happy to fill that desire.
Of course Ubuntu comes with graphics programs. Just about everything a home user needs is installed by default. F-spot is a photo manager. Like Rhythmbox, it hides the file organization from you and uses tags to help you keep track of photos. Want only the photos from that trip to Indonesia with John in them? That's easy to do with tags. It also has touch-up capabilities, meaning that you don't need to use a photo editor for minor edits (although you can open one right from F-spot's interface). F-spot even has a version-control system, allowing you to save the original while touching up the photo. Ubuntu comes with the Gimp, a bitmap graphics editor. It's different from Photoshop, so it may take some getting used to, but web developers who use it claim that it can do just about everything that Photoshop can do. Openoffice.org's Draw program is a full-featured vector drawing program which is easier to use than ever!

ZDNet benchmarked Firefox against other browsers and found it to be the fastest. Safari and Firefox basically tied. ARS Technica reported on tests of memory usage when opening thirty tabs. Firefox 3 beat all comers, even Opera, often considered to be the light-weight browser of choice. Because Firefox's extensions are part of what makes it so great, Ubuntu makes it easy to install extensions system-wide for every user. While not all extensions are available this way, the most common are. Firefox has a brand-new bookmarking system which keeps track of the most recent, most visited, and newly tagged. Tags mean that you never need to think about which of several categories you want to file a bookmark in. Pidgin 2.4 is a chat client which can talk to the networks for AIM, GTalk, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, Myspace, and many more. Because it concentrates on compatibility with many networks, not all the advanced features of every network are available. Pidgin doesn't support voice or video chat, for example. If you need this functionality, there are other clients which support it. Pidgin currently holds the top position on Lifehacker's list of top five IM clients. Ekiga is a software phone, much like Skype. It uses the open SIP protocol, making it able to talk to many other software phones. You can also purchase minutes to call out to cell phones and land lines around the world at very affordable rates, most often below those of Skype. Unfortunately, Skype's protocol is secret, and Ekiga is unable to cross the bridge to talk to Skype users. Skype DOES make a client for Ubuntu, though, so you can contact your Skype friends that way. This release of Ubuntu has a new bittorrent client called Transmission. Transmission is a light but full-featured client which supports multiple torrents, global and individual bandwidth usage, and creating torrents.
Games
Ubuntu comes with many time-wasting games installed by default. While no one would call Ubuntu a gaming system, there are literally hundreds more to install from the repositories. Arcade, side-scrollers, strategy, simulation, and first-person shooters are all represented. There are no usable MMORPGs in the Ubuntu repositories, but several major games have Linux clients, and even more can run under the Windows compatibility layer. Let's watch Daeng lose at several easy games. (Ooh, the computer got him diagonally) Wow. He's really bad, isn't he?
Office Applications
Unlike other operating systems, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS comes with a full suite of office applications. You don't get a cut down version like Microsoft Works. You don't need to buy a new Mac to get it included, either. Evolution is a personal information manager which handles your e-mail, calendaring, address book, tasks, and memos. It can connect to POP mail systems like your company's e-mail or Hotmail, and it can use IMAP to read the mail while leaving it on the server. You can even read your GMail from Evolution. The calendar handles many formats, both local and on the network. New in Ubuntu is a connector for your Google Calendar. The address book integrates well with the file browser and the IM clients, allowing you to add chat buddies or send e-mail from the file browser. As mentioned before, tasks and appointments in Evolution show up on your desktop in the calendar. Double clicking on a date in the desktop calendar even brings up that date on teh Evolution calendar. How easy is that? Openoffice.org is probably the second-most famous piece of Free software next to Firefox. It may need no introduction, but you'll get one, anyway. The word processor is the brand-new 2.4 version of Openoffice.org, bringing better Microsoft Word compatibility, PDF editing, improved localization, including easier switching of spell-check languages, and more integration into the Ubuntu desktop. The spreadsheet has performance enhancements and something for those addicted to pivot tables. The presentation software has fancy new 3D slide transition effects. The database program gains compatibility with Access 2007 files. There is also a vector graphics program, but we'll be talking about that with the other graphics programs.
Sound and Video
Ubuntu comes with all the programs you'll need to play music and video on your computer. While Ubuntu doesn't play many types of files right out of the box, almost every kind of file is playable after you install the right codecs. Sadly, due to digital rights management (DRM) and the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, a few formats can't be played legally without purchasing the codecs. Vendors like Fluendo offer these codecs in easy-to-install packs for less than you would think. If you are in a country which has more progressive laws, you can install these codecs from within Ubuntu using the codec installer. Totem movie player is a simple movie player which supports playlists. It has many plugins for visualization and connectivity. It can search your user area for videos, search YouTube, or even connect to your MythTV server to play new recordings, meaning you don't need to have a dedicated front-end to MythTV anymore. Let's search for a video and see what we get. pressing "f" takes us into full-screen mode. Pressing it again takes us back out. Now let's take a look at what YouTube has to say about Ubuntu Hardy. Since it's small, we can zoom using the 0, 1, or 2 buttons. That was great. What about music? Ubuntu's default music player, Rhythmbox, takes a music management approach to playing music. It searches your music library and organizes the tracks by artist and album. You can add other factors like genre and year, if you want. There's no need to go to the file manager and look through your collection. In fact, if you do that and double click on a file, Ubuntu assumes that you want to play a single file and opens the file in the Movie player. You can change this behavior if you want to, of course. Practically everything in Ubuntu is configurable. The music player handles your portable music player, whether it be an iPod, an MTP player (you know ... those that need to use Windows Media Player to transfer files), or a simple USB Mass Storage device. You can add files to, delete files from, and play files directly from your portable. It can even transcode on the fly for you. If you have a DAAP server like iTunes or Firefly, Rhythmbox will identify it automatically and the songs will appear in the left panel. Rhythmbox shares files using DAAP, too, so you can share files with your Rhythmbox and iTunes-using family or roommates. Put in a CD and you will see that Rhythmbox can play it, looking up the track information automatically on the internet. Right-click on the CD to rip it to your collection. Ubuntu also has a dedicated CD burner for those who want more control over their rips. Although you can't use the iTunes store since it only works with iTunes, there are a couple of stores for independent artists that you can use from within Rhythmbox. You can also purchase your tracks DRM free from Amazon. Hey, Ubuntu developers, we're waiting for that Amazon store plugin! New to Ubuntu this time around is Brasero, a CD burning application. While virtually everything the average user needs to do with regard to burning can be done from the file browser, many people feel more comfortable with a Nero-style CD burner, and the Ubuntu developers were happy to fill that desire.
Graphics
Unfortunately, a bug in the Hardy beta version of F-Spot is keeping me from finishing this portion of the video.Of course Ubuntu comes with graphics programs. Just about everything a home user needs is installed by default. F-spot is a photo manager. Like Rhythmbox, it hides the file organization from you and uses tags to help you keep track of photos. Want only the photos from that trip to Indonesia with John in them? That's easy to do with tags. It also has touch-up capabilities, meaning that you don't need to use a photo editor for minor edits (although you can open one right from F-spot's interface). F-spot even has a version-control system, allowing you to save the original while touching up the photo. Ubuntu comes with the Gimp, a bitmap graphics editor. It's different from Photoshop, so it may take some getting used to, but web developers who use it claim that it can do just about everything that Photoshop can do. Openoffice.org's Draw program is a full-featured vector drawing program which is easier to use than ever!
Accessories
Ubuntu has many little programs which make your life simpler. They include: A dictionary to look up words from the internet. It has multi-language capability and can recommend words which might be close to what you really wanted but couldn't remember. Watch Daeng misspell some easy words. The calculator looks simple, but it can be used for more advanced problems, scientifics equations, or your accounting needs, too. Tomboy notes is an easy way to organize your notes and your life. It uses a wiki-style format to link between notes, making remembering your murky past that much easier. Daeng uses it for all his research. The Disk Usage Analyzer will show you where all that disk space goes. Daeng's got way too much porn, I see. The Tracker indexed search will find files using a full-text search. You no longer need to worry if you lost a file and can't find it. Finally, the Deskbar applet pulls these all together. You now have one place to type your desires and then you can choose to search your files, your bookmarks, your history, your notes, the web, or for a definition. You can do much more than that, too. The Deskbar will become the first place you look for anything.Conculsion

Meebo may be your IM solution

Meebo may be the application you've been dying to have on Linux. It's an IM client which handles multiple prootocols -- Yahoo!, MSN, GTalk, ICQ, AIM, and Jabber. While that's fewer than Pidgin, it's still a lot. The tasty addition is the support of voice and video chat, which Pidgin lacks. Meebo also has group chat functions, multi-player games, and streaming music videos. Oh, yeah, it's also cross platform. How does it do this? It's a web app, of course.
The voice and video functions require Flash support in your browser, but so much of the web is already Flash that you probably wouldn't notice, right?

I've finally switched
Many, many years ago (maybe 1997), I started using KDE and Netscape 4 on Linux. Talk about ugly .... I tried to use KDE's browser (Don't remember if it was Konqueror back then or not) whenever possible to keep the number of loaded libraries low, but I found Netscape necessary a lot of the time. When Mozilla nightlies became usable, I switched to those instead of Netscape, but those days were the dark time on the Internet, when too many sites only worked in IE4 and 5.
In Thailand, I switched from Mandrake to LinuxTLE, a local, Thai-language distro based on RH, and I was pushed into the Gnome camp. I've used Galeon and Epiphany for the most part since then for the same reason that I used KDE's native browser when possible: It makes everything easier.
When I switched to Debian and then Ubuntu 4.10 in Korea, I started to rally for Ubuntu's default browser to be Epiphany. It's quite good, actually -- light and with a lot of good extensions, though not as many as FF.
Firefox 3, though, finally swung me over. It's integrated enough into the Gnome desktop that I'm not feeling like I'm dragging. It's memory use is down by about 50%. It's wicked fast at Javascript, too.
Epiphany, on the other hand, gets all the benefits of the Gecko engine, but has several show-stopper bugs which aren't likely to get fixed for the Hardy release. These finally pushed me over to Firefox.
In the migration, though, I found one huge issue with FF3. The bookmark system changed, and I actually had to google for a few minutes to find out how to import bookmarks from a file: "Organize Bookmarks" is gone and replaced by the inscrutible "Show All Bookmarks." File > Import only works for importing from certain applications, not for files.
So, to import a file, go to Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks and choose Import/Export. It's not quite as intuitive as one would hope (not the "Import/Export" part ... the fact that it's located in "Show All Bookmarks")
So ends my trist with the only non-default application I regularly used.

Introducing Ubuntu's Default Web Browser, Firefox 3.0
Are you new to Firefox?
If you've never used Firefox on Windows, read this section to learn about how it may differ from Windows XP's default browser, Internet Explorer 6. If you are familiar with Firefox, you can safely skip to the next section, What's new in Firefox 3.0?
The Philosophy behind Firefox
Firefox tries to be a small, secure browser which follows the standards for the World Wide Web while still having the features that most people expect. It includes a pop-up blocker, a password manager, a download manager, and anti-phishing measures by default. Just about any other feature you want can be added through extensions and plugins. Firefox can even be extended enough to become a full-fledged music or video player.
Overview of the Application

As you can see in the screenshot, Firefox is quite similar to Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), which you're probably familiar with.
The main difference you'll notice between the two browsers is that Firefox uses tabs to organize your browsing. You'll no longer need to have fifteen different windows full of various web pages and pop-ups. Firefox stops virtually all pop-ups by default, and you can keep all your desired web pages in a single window with 1-15 tabs. If there is only one web page in a given window, the tab bar hides itself automatically.
There is a location bar which is used to show you the address of the web page you're visiting. It has two additional features when compared to IE6 -- one-click RSS feed subscription and a quick bookmark link. Use the RSS feed button to keep track of changes on a web page which changes often. The bookmark called "Latest BBC Headlines" is an example of this kind of RSS feed. The quick bookmark link allows you to save a few clicks over going to the Bookmarks menu.
Next to the location bar is the search bar. There are quite a few search engines installed by default, and many web pages will let you add more searches quickly by looking in the quick search drop-down menu for "Manage Search Engines."
There is also a bookmark toolbar which allows quick access to your most commonly used pages. By default, this toolbar has bookmarks, for your home page, a tutorial about Firefox, your most used and most recent bookmarks, and BBC headlines. You can add more by creating bookmarks and putting them in the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder.
What's new in Firefox 3.0?
If you've used Firefox before, you'll want to know how version 3.0 differs from 2.0.
It's significantly faster, having undergone some real architectural changes. The back end now uses a transactional database, too. What does that mean for you? It means no data loss to passwords, bookmarks, etc. if an application crash or power outage occurs. Memory use is also down, with the browser's memory leaks having been largely plugged. You can now leave Firefox on for longer without slowing your system down.
* Reliability: A user’s bookmarks, history, cookies, and preferences are now stored in a transactionally secure database format which will prevent data loss even if their system crashes.
* Speed: Major architectural changes put foundations in place for major performance tuning which have resulted in speed increases in Beta 1, and will show further gains in future Beta releases.
* Memory usage: Over 300 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more. Developers are continuing to work on optimizing memory use and reducing fragmentation.
There's a new, resumable download manager which is much easier to use than previous versions and which makes finding those files simpler. Password can be saved at any time, even after a successful login, by using the information bar.
Firefox has a completely revamped bookmark and history engine which makes organizing and finding your favorite sites a lot easier. Tags have been added to the traditional folders, making putting bookmarks in multiple places possible. You can also now add a bookmark for the current page by simply clicking the star located in the location bar.
And that location bar is more powerful in other ways, too. Typing the name or tag of a page you have visited recently or bookmarked some time ago will bring it right up for you to choose from.
The toolbar contains smart bookmarks with your most visited pages, recent bookmarks, and recent tags. Since people tend to visit the same places again and again when researching, smart bookmarks ease getting to those pages.
There have also been numerous improvements in security, making phishing and other misdirection more difficult.
Extending Firefox
You can add a lot of functionality to the basic Firefox browser, making your surfing experience that much better. There are hundreds of extensions and plugins available from the Mozilla website, but Ubuntu packages quite a few and makes it easy to add them system-wide from the Synaptic Package Manager.
Available extensions
- Greasemonkey: There are quite a few scripts which will reformat web pages for you, e.g. adding a delete button to GMail or threading comments in a non-threaded forum. The scripts need to be added separately after the extension is installed.
- Web Developer: Web developers need testing tools for various screen sizes and varying levels of browser fuctionality. This extension gives the developer those tools.
- Sage RSS/Atom feed reader: If you want a more sophisticated RSS reader than Firefox's default Smart Bookmarks, this extension is for you.
- Beagle: Some people use Beagle indexing to search their documents. Ubuntu uses a different program called Tracker, so this extension likely won't be very useful to you.
- Image Zoom: You can easily enlarge the pictures on a web page by using this extension.
- Live Headers: If you need to look at the conversation between your browser and the Web server, this extension will help you do that.
- Scrapbook: With this extension, you can save pictures, web pages, or web clippings for later. This is especially useful for people who blog regularly.
Available plugins
- Launchpad: Launchpad is Ubuntu's bug-tracking and project management space. You can get easy access to it through Firefox using this plugin.
- Adobe Flash: If you want to play Flash games or watch online videos, you'll need this plugin. If you visit almost any Korean web page, the entire site will use it.
- Gnash: This is a free alternative to Adobe's Flash plugin. It works for some things, especially videos, and has full support for everything below Flash 7. Flash 8/9 are only partially supported. If you run a 64-bit system, this may be the best option for you.
- Java: You can view Java applets in a browser window with this plugin.
- Acrobat Reader: Ubuntu has a great default PDF viewer called Evince, but it lacks some of the more advanced features of Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you want to view advanced forms in your browser, you can install this. I'd recommend waiting until you find out that you actually need it, though, because Acrobat Reader is significantly slower than Evince.
- Noscript: If Javascript gets you down or slows down your computer too much, you can selectively turn it off using this plugin.
- Totem: You can view movies like Quicktime and DiVX using this plugin.
- VLC: If you prefer VLC over Totem, you want this plugin instead of the previous one.
- Ubufox: This plugin is installed by default and adds Apt URL functionality, making writing HowTos a lot easier. When I say "Click the link to install," I'm telling you to use this plugin.

Put Your Best Chat Buddies on Your Panel
So you've got a couple of people that take up 95% of your chat time. Maybe they're your teammates. Maybe they're your best friends. For me, it's my gal. Whoever it is, you probably start a conversation with them this way:
Wouldn't it be nice to take these four steps down to a single, one-click method? You can, but you'll need to be using the Empathy client, which may not suit all of you. Since you're probably using Pidgin, let's install Empathy from the repos. You'll also need the Empathy Megaphone applet. You can click the links above to install the application and applet automatically.
Once you install Empathy, you'll need to install connection managers for any IM protocols you'll be using. The linkified list is here, to make it easy for you:
Once you configure Empathy to connect to your Jabber, GTalk (really also Jabber), or MSN network, you can add the Megaphone applet to your panel. Right-click on the panel and choose "Add to Panel...." Choose the Megaphone applet and click "Add." Repeat this for as many contacts as you want to appear on the panel.

You'll find a configure-style icon on your panel.

Click on that and you'll be asked to choose a contact for that applet to watch.

Choose your contact, and the applet will tell you if he or she is off-line

or online.

Installing Ubuntu 7.10 - AMD64
I decided to take my previously installed machine and switch from 32 bits to 64 bits. I was more than a little nervous about the switch since I had done a ton of work customizing the old one.
Some background:
This computer was purchased specifically to work with Ubuntu, so it's almost entirely an Intel machine. As much as I root for AMD, Intel releases all of its specs and writes open source drivers for almost all of its stuff. Here's the spec:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 2GB
HDD: SATA 250GB Samsung
Chipset: i801
Graphics: Onboard i945
NIC: rt8139
Wifi: RaLink rt73usb
My first step was to back up my data. I attached the external drive, hit CTRL-h to show hidden files in my home folder, hit CTRL-a to select everything, then went item by item, deselecting the parts I knew I didn't need, like my .wine directory. Finally, I dragged everything onto the removable drive (46GB!!) and waited. And waited.
While I waited, I burned the Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 disk image that I had downloaded the night before. It was too easy: I stuck a blank CD in the drive, clicked "Ignore," right-clicked on the image, and chose "Write to disk." Nothing could have been simpler, except that the first CD had an error during write, so I had to repeat the process, this time at a lower speed just to be safe. I used the md5sum command to check the hashes of the burned CD and the image to make sure that they were the same. (I had previously checked the hash of the image.)
I rebooted with the CD in the drive, hit F4 to change the resolution to 1280x1024, and hit enter. Once the live CD was up and running, I immediately ran the install and surfed the web while I waited.
Then I ran into my first problem. The wireless dropped the connection and wouldn't come back up. The security updates failed due to the lack of an Internet connection. Indeed, once I rebooted into the installed system, the RaLink 73 USB device wasn't even recognized, so I busted out the LAN cables. Meh.
Then I started the restore process suing the same method I had used earlier, only in reverse.
I went to Software Sources, activated all the extra repositories and updated the package list. I used Add/Remove to install my normal additions to Ubuntu: ubuntu-restricted-extras (for all the codecs and plugins), Lyx (for writing), Referencer (for my bibliographies), Epiphany (which I prefer to Firefox), Devede (a DVD creator), Pitivi (a VERY simple video editor), Istanbul (for taking screencasts), and the Empathy / Telepathy set (the upcoming Gnome IM / VOIP / Video chat solution integrated into every application). I also updated all the software.
So here I am, typing on my newly reinstalled and configured, barely an hour after I first started the process. F-Spot has all my photos. Rhythmbox still has my songs. Best of all, my documents are all here and Tracker has the index of them. My bookmarks and passwords are even in place. Computational tasks like encoding seem faster, but I didn't do any benchmarks. My 2GB of RAM can now be handled natively, instead of in 1GB chinks. Reinstallation couldn't get any easier. Next time, I won't even have to restore because I've given myself a separate /home partition. I'll still back up before the upgrade, though. Always back up.
Now I need to get to work on the wireless driver ....
Well, that's done. Download the rt73-cvs tarball from serialmonkey.com and grag the sole directory onto the desktop. Install build-essential to set up the build environment. Enter the Module directory in rt73 and type "make" then "sudo strip -S rt73.ko" and finally "sudo make install" to finish the installation. Blacklist the regular rt modules in the kernel and load the new rt73 module.
In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist:

Set up networking. Done. Maybe ten minutes.
On a side note, this shouldn't have to be done at all. RaLink wireless devices used to work fine. There are many people like me who went out of theri way to buy RaLink specifically because they were supported. I'm pissed at Canonical for shipping drivers which it knew to be bad. They drop. They crash. They just don't work. I filed bugs during the alpha phase. Nothing happened. Friggin' don't ship them if you can't fix them! This situation had better be fixed by Hardy, or the LTS moniker won't mean shit.
Well, I found another problem. Flash isn't installed. Normally, in 32 bit, ubuntu-restricted-extras would install flash, but that didn't happen here. Installing flash-plugin-nonfree appeared to work, but the browser experience is the same as if I hadn't installed it.
It turns out that there's a bug in the 64-bit version, and the fix is linked to in the bug tracker. Installing this fixed all problems. NOTE: Installing packages from untrusted sources is a bad idea.
Next on the agenda is to get a seamless backup and restore system working. TimeVault is my preferrred application for this, but no 64 bit version exists. Compiling my own fails, and there's almost no documentation on dependencies required, etc. Stay tuned for this one.
Some background:
This computer was purchased specifically to work with Ubuntu, so it's almost entirely an Intel machine. As much as I root for AMD, Intel releases all of its specs and writes open source drivers for almost all of its stuff. Here's the spec:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 2GB
HDD: SATA 250GB Samsung
Chipset: i801
Graphics: Onboard i945
NIC: rt8139
Wifi: RaLink rt73usb
My first step was to back up my data. I attached the external drive, hit CTRL-h to show hidden files in my home folder, hit CTRL-a to select everything, then went item by item, deselecting the parts I knew I didn't need, like my .wine directory. Finally, I dragged everything onto the removable drive (46GB!!) and waited. And waited.
While I waited, I burned the Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 disk image that I had downloaded the night before. It was too easy: I stuck a blank CD in the drive, clicked "Ignore," right-clicked on the image, and chose "Write to disk." Nothing could have been simpler, except that the first CD had an error during write, so I had to repeat the process, this time at a lower speed just to be safe. I used the md5sum command to check the hashes of the burned CD and the image to make sure that they were the same. (I had previously checked the hash of the image.)
I rebooted with the CD in the drive, hit F4 to change the resolution to 1280x1024, and hit enter. Once the live CD was up and running, I immediately ran the install and surfed the web while I waited.
Then I ran into my first problem. The wireless dropped the connection and wouldn't come back up. The security updates failed due to the lack of an Internet connection. Indeed, once I rebooted into the installed system, the RaLink 73 USB device wasn't even recognized, so I busted out the LAN cables. Meh.
Then I started the restore process suing the same method I had used earlier, only in reverse.
I went to Software Sources, activated all the extra repositories and updated the package list. I used Add/Remove to install my normal additions to Ubuntu: ubuntu-restricted-extras (for all the codecs and plugins), Lyx (for writing), Referencer (for my bibliographies), Epiphany (which I prefer to Firefox), Devede (a DVD creator), Pitivi (a VERY simple video editor), Istanbul (for taking screencasts), and the Empathy / Telepathy set (the upcoming Gnome IM / VOIP / Video chat solution integrated into every application). I also updated all the software.
So here I am, typing on my newly reinstalled and configured, barely an hour after I first started the process. F-Spot has all my photos. Rhythmbox still has my songs. Best of all, my documents are all here and Tracker has the index of them. My bookmarks and passwords are even in place. Computational tasks like encoding seem faster, but I didn't do any benchmarks. My 2GB of RAM can now be handled natively, instead of in 1GB chinks. Reinstallation couldn't get any easier. Next time, I won't even have to restore because I've given myself a separate /home partition. I'll still back up before the upgrade, though. Always back up.
Now I need to get to work on the wireless driver ....
Well, that's done. Download the rt73-cvs tarball from serialmonkey.com and grag the sole directory onto the desktop. Install build-essential to set up the build environment. Enter the Module directory in rt73 and type "make" then "sudo strip -S rt73.ko" and finally "sudo make install" to finish the installation. Blacklist the regular rt modules in the kernel and load the new rt73 module.
In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist:

Set up networking. Done. Maybe ten minutes.
On a side note, this shouldn't have to be done at all. RaLink wireless devices used to work fine. There are many people like me who went out of theri way to buy RaLink specifically because they were supported. I'm pissed at Canonical for shipping drivers which it knew to be bad. They drop. They crash. They just don't work. I filed bugs during the alpha phase. Nothing happened. Friggin' don't ship them if you can't fix them! This situation had better be fixed by Hardy, or the LTS moniker won't mean shit.
Well, I found another problem. Flash isn't installed. Normally, in 32 bit, ubuntu-restricted-extras would install flash, but that didn't happen here. Installing flash-plugin-nonfree appeared to work, but the browser experience is the same as if I hadn't installed it.

Why I Use Epiphany Instead of Firefox on Ubuntu
The title explains the premise, I've been using Epiphany for a couple of years and is one of the few changes I recommend making to Ubuntu (some of the others include finding something ... anything ... except OpenOffice.org, changing your photo import program from gphoto to f-spot-import, and using deluge instead of the anemic bittorrent client currently offered). Here are the reasons why:
Added Later : I have a video I made showing how much faster Epiphany is on my machine. After I made it, I realised that Epiphany had several extensions loaded while FF had none. That makes the difference even more amazing. I'll post the video this evening.
OK, so this took a lot longer than I planned. Both applications were loaded, closed, given a bit of time to flush, then loaded again. The time is for the second loading.
- Epiphany is a Gnome application, so it fits into the Ubuntu desktop. If I were running Kubuntu, I would want to use Konqueror instead of Firefox. Epiphany is the official Gnome browser, in fact. The look is entirely consistent. Firefox does its best to copy the look and icons of the Gnome theme, but it still fails in important areas like UI consistency, menu placement, preferences, etc.
- Epiphany uses the same libraries as the rest of Gnome, lowering its memory footprint. Firefox is ultimately an XUL application. When I start Firefox, all those initial libraries need to load, meaning it's slow. Did anyone ever complain that FF was slow? Epiphany uses the Gnome and GTK libraries which have already been loaded by teh GNome desktop. It comes up almost instantaneously and reacts quickly. My memory is low. My memory use for an entire desktop, applets, music, and browsing with 10 tabs usually runs at about 300MB.
- Gnome is increasingly being built with this browser in mind. Integration. It was good (in some ways) for Windows' users. The next version of Gnome will see further integration of bookmarks (read Epiphany's bookmarks) into the desktop. Firefox, however, is seeing diminishing development on Linux. Firefox 3 will emphasize Windows and Mac.
- Epiphany and Firefox both use the same rendering engine so my pages turn out exactly the same.
- Epiphany has most of the same extensions as FF.
- It's Free software.
- Added Later : Epiphany doesn't do anything except browsing. RSS feeds are handled by the system's RSS reader. HTML source opens in the HTML reader. Very Unixy, that way. This helps keep the codebase cleaner and make it easier to squash bugs.

Install Deluge and Enjoy Bittorrent Freedom
If you've recently installed Ubuntu and tried to download something via Bittorrent, you'll have noticed that a bittorrent client is installed by default. Just like the rest of Ubuntu's applications, you'll everything you need to operate day-to-day already installed. The basic bittorrent client has few options, though, and downloading more than one torrent at a time can be difficult, and there isn't any way to limit the upload or download speed globally, only per torrent.
Many users install Azureus to get a full-featured bittorrent client, but it is slow and uses a large amount of memory. uTorrent isn't available on Linux, but a nice little Gnome-friendly app called Deluge is!

It can easily handle ten or more torrents without affecting your CPU or memory in a significant way. The Deluge site says
Deluge offers a large number of plugins, too, extending the funtionality of Deluge.
Linkage is another client that works well within Ubuntu, but it's still quite new and lacks the features (especially the plugins) that Deluge has.

Webrunner -- Is all the fuss worth the effort?
What is Webrunner?
Webrunner is a fork of Mozilla (the basis for Firefox) which is designed to make web apps like GMail and Google Docs appear to be more like desktop (local) apps. It claims to use native widgets for things like buttons, making the page more closely follow the theme of the desktop. How is it working? Let's take a look.
Webrunner's Look
Take a look at the following screenshots:
GMail
A couple of the buttons at the top of the screen look nice, but the rest of the page looks the same.
Google Docs
Again, a couple of buttons at the top (and no URI bar or menus).
Facebook
The Facebook pages look identical to the non-Webrunner version.
Yahoo Mail
Yahoo won't let us do the Beta (because the browser is "unsupported ... meh!), but even the normal buttons don't appear different.
What does it mean?
Let's compare the appearance of several other applications rendering the web. Konqueror gets the same look without requiring a separate application.

While I think that the idea of Webrunner is great, it's an alpha product that will supply nothing users can't get from Konqueror or Safari right now. Even Epiphany (the default Gnome browser) users get most of it, like the scroll bar in the following screenshot.

Why I Increasingly Like Google Docs
When I first started using Google Docs, things were a little iffy. There were lots of problems, especially related to the HTML input: I still routinely jump into the HTML mode to correct some formatting issue that's bugging me, like a div or span that won't close. I stayed on, though, because I'm using Ubuntu Linux and OpenOffice.org is just too damn slow for my tastes. That's right! You heard me. The local app is much slower than a web app. OO.o guys, start code cleanup on that mess you're brewing, please. The features are killer, but the speed is a killer.
Anyway, I'll be doing a bit on Docs main points later, as a part in my series on Ubuntu apps. Hehe. That's cute. No, I won't be doing OO.o.
The New Look
I do pretty much everything on Docs now, and was working on a new lesson plan for about two hours, when I went back to the Docs & Spreadsheets page to tag some of my documents. Things weren't working correctly. I decided that the page may have timed out since I hadn't used it in a while, so I refreshed and was greeted by a brand new interface. And by brand new, I mean completely fucking different. I actually though a different site was coming up by accident. It took me a minute to see what they'd done, but then I realized the just changed tags for folders. The sidebar is a nice addition, though. Everything seems easier to get at now.
